ENUMERATION
What is enumeration
?
In this type
of paragraph development , a writer
starts with a general class, then proceeds to break it down by listing
some or all of its members or parts. If we wanted to show a diagram of
the enumerative process, our diagram might look something like this

There
are three basic kinds of materials that can be found in any good library .
First, there are books on all subject, both in English and in many other
languages. These books are organized according to subject , title and author in
a central file called the card catalog. Books can generally be checked out of
the library and taken home for a period
of two to for weeks. Second, there are reference works, which include
encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, atlases, etc, and which generally
must be used in the library itself. Third, there are periodicals magazines,
newspaper, pamphlets which are filed alphabetically in racks, or which have
been microfilmed to conserve space. Like reference works, periodicals cannot
usually be removed from the library

Notice the use
of the world kinds in the preceding model paragraph . We
will call this word an enumerator since it helps us show the
reader exactly what we are listing or
enumerating. In the model paragraph, it kinds of materials. Remember
that enumerator s are valuable key words. You should try to put them in topic
sentence of enumerative paragraphs. This will help you to organize your
paragraphs more clearly; it will also help the reader to follow your train of
thought more easily.
Writer
frequently wish to make a list of other things besides kinds or types.
They may, for example, want to talk about : Classes, parts, elements,
factors, characteristics, aspects, divisions, subdivisions, categories.
