of study:
We
use skimming when you’re trying to decide if a book in a library or bookshop is
right for you. In this careful reading, you may find it helpful to skim first
to get a general idea but then go back to read in detail. Use a dictionary to
make sure you understand all the words used. With skimming, you can master the
contents of the book is generally well within a short time to prepare for more
demanding reading of concentration for a book with a thickness of 100 pages,
you may need to do skimming about 5-7 minutes. And 5 minutes spent was going to
be very helpful in understanding the overall context of
the reading material.

CHAPTER 2
Understanding Skimming Technique
2.1 Definition
of skimming
Skimming
is the most rudimentary type of reading. Its object is to familiarize you as
quickly as possible with the material to be read. You may use it for entire
books or for shorter sections. You leaf through the material looking at titles,
subheadings, illustrations, maps, and charts. You are trying to become familiar
with the subject matter. Remember, both speed and comprehension depends on
familiarity. The more comfortable you are with the manner in which the material
is presented, the faster you will move through it and the more you will retain.
Two to three minutes is ample time for a chapter, ten to fifteen minutes for a
book.
Skimming
may also be used to search out certain short passages you have lost. Your eye
should race over the pages looking for clues which will help you narrow down
the probable location. Though you feel completely lost, the act of skimming
will refresh your memory and lead you to the passage. Trust your memory. If it
says upper left-hand corner, look there first. With practice you can develop a
memory which will allow you to recall the exact location on a page of a piece
of information. After that, patient speed will do the rest. Skimming before you
start is valuable for any type of reading, even pleasure reading, except
perhaps for mysteries.
Skimming
is used to quickly identify the main ideas of a text. When you read the
newspaper, you're probably not reading it word-by-word, instead you're scanning
the text. Skimming is done at a speed three to four times faster than normal
reading. People often skim when they have lots of material to read in a limited
amount of time. Use skimming when you want to see if an article may be of
interest in your research.
There
are many strategies that can be used when skimming. Some people read the first
and last paragraphs using headings, summarizes and other organizers as they
move down the page or screen. You might read the title, subtitles, subheading,
and illustrations. Consider reading the first sentence of each paragraph. This
technique is useful when you're seeking specific information rather than
reading for comprehension. Skimming works well to find dates, names, and
places. It might be used to review graphs, tables, and charts.
2.2 Purpose to
skimming
Many
have interpreted as a mere skimming raking leaves, whereas the true sense is a
set of reading skills systematically to obtain efficient results, for various
purposes, such as the following:
1. To recognize the reading topic. If
you go to a bookstore or library and would like to know what the discussion in
the book you choose it, you do skimming a few minutes (or browsing). Skimming
to see the material to be read, just to know the material, also made people to
vote for articles in magazines and newspapers (clippings).
2. To know people's opinions (opinions).
Here, you already know the topics covered, you need the author's opinion on the
matter. For example, writing a newspaper editorial; you may simply read the
first paragraph or the end of which usually contains the conclusions made by
the author (editor).
3. To get the important part that we
need without having read the whole thing. You need to look at those materials
to choose a good idea, but not read in full.
2.3 Function of
skimming
Skimming is also usefull a reading proces. As for some
the reasons, why skimming can be done without having to worry too much loss of
meaning is:
a.
Most words have only a few key word into the structure
forming.
b.
The reading materials is thick enough, not all parts have
the same difficulty level.
c.
There are certain word
that are very important an instrumental in shaping the structure of the
sentece subject and predicate.
